Are titles really that significant?

Humility (n.) - a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness

Humility is one of the virtues that I really love to talk about as it is the counterpart of the sin, pride. Basketball in the country is really famous. The sport has produced several people from different colleges and universities that made an impact in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Some of the well-known players were Robert Jaworski (player and coach of one of the famous teams in the country and was a former senator), Alvin Patrimonio (nicknamed as 'The Captain'), and Samboy Lim (aka 'The Skywalker' due to his acrobatic shots, dunks, and aerial maneuvers). These people earned their titles after playing the game they love for many years. But are these titles really that significant?

Titles are given to people who have accomplished a certain process in their lives (e.g. passing the licensure exam, or passing the board exam, etc.) or experienced something great (e.g. killing the largest bear). Titles are here and there and they are normally seen in professionals. 

Awhile ago, as I was scrolling my news feed in facebook, I saw one particular story that made me rethink of the word 'title.' Normally, in the process, people tend to become arrogant at some point in their lives after earning the highest position in a company or being appointed as president over an institution. At times, they get blinded by their titles and the fame they earn because of the changes. But one man, did the exact opposite- Jesus Christ. 

Before Christ and His disciples ate dinner, Christ served His disciples by washing their feet. Christ did the work of the lowliest of servants.

Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master.. - John 13:16

Christ taught them that serving one another builds up humility and love. It is also taught that the true greatness in His Kingdom is attained by those with a servant's heart (Mark 9:35).

Titles are just two to four letters in front of your name that show people what you are, but not who. You may be a General; an Admiral; a Doctor; an Attorney; an Engineer; a President; a Prime Minister; a Teacher; a Reverend Doctor; a Professor; a Pope; a Pastor; a Priest; a Nurse, or anything else. But at the end of the day, you're just a man/woman doing your duties because it is what you love or what you were called to do.

I pray that this post will give you a realization of what sevanthood really is and that humility should abound more than pride. This means, being humble in every aspect of your life.
